Biography

After a long, eventful period in the rock scene, I decided in 2009 to quit that part of my life. Apart of being tour promoter of hundreds of tours for foreign bands, I happened to be manager of 2 of the most successful bands in The Netherlands: Doe Maar and Bløf.

It was time to do something totally different and to start exploring my own fantasy and creativity.

I had a plan: making kind of performances in boxes. I began to collect all kind of stuff, which I could find at flea markets, or second hand on the internet, but also in the streets, beaches, woods (nature). I bought some simple wine cases an started to make 3-dimensional visual scenes with (parts) of the found figurines and other objects. A kind of surrealism, mixed with social politics and sometime philosophical elements became my cause.

Whitin a quite short time there was some interest for my work and the way I designed it. I was pretty surprised, but it encouraged me to go on. And soon I got invited for a small exhibition. Then I met a lady of a gallery in Middelburg (Gallerie T) and she invited me at her gallery. I was astonished, but of course I accepted the offer. From there I became in contact with David Smith (Smith-Davidson Gallery in Amsterdam) and it went on and on.

I tell my stories by the means of existing figurines/statues/toys. The reason that I work with these existing elements like barbiedolls, action men, old porcelain and all can find; used fabrics, remains of plants, artificial flowers, old jewellery etc. which I find at flea markets, marketplaces on the internet, but also in nature, is that I like to take that stuff out of their known environment, enabling them as a symbol for things I like to express. Some elements placed in a different environment will get another sense and will alienate the spectator of their reality.

Another reason is that I can create some humour, an important part of my look at people, history, reality. If you look well you can find  a lot of comedy/irony in some of my scenes. Sometimes I like to place the spectator sometimes in a  kitschy make-believe world.

Another important element in my work is my past in the rock scene. I get quite often inspired by songs. Sometimes I follow the lyrics, sometimes I make my own story of the song.

In the beginning I used boxes in which I made the scene, but the last couple of years I also work at flat pieces of wood, but still always 3-dimensional. That’s also the nature of the stuff I work with.

Nederlands
